Project 365 – Day 187: Windows, doors, stairs and balconies on Le Plateau

July 5 2012

First off, I was very honored to have been freshly pressed today – it was nice knowing the sand sculptures got a lot more views in their limited life as a result 🙂 So welcome new followers to this little corner of the web and a daily visual tour of Montreal. For those who are not local, I hope you will come to love Montreal as much as I have over the last 13 years and, if you have the opportunity, come visit the taste of Europe in North America in person soon.

Today I was thinking of either catching a couple of sets down at the Jazz fest, or go watch the film U-571 which is showing at the old port on an outdoor screen. The free outdoor cinema (Horaire de Ciné-Maritime) will be showing maritime genre films (Jaws, Das Boot) each Thursday night until 23rd August – although I’ve seen them all at least once  before 🙁

I ended up doing neither. Instead during a late afternoon walk around the Plateau I decided to photograph some of the colorful doors, windows, staircases and balconies along avenue Laval (my favorite street on Le Plateau) and avenue Henri Julien.

The image of the day actually was an accident. While taking a handheld 3 exposure HDR, during the final long exposure I moved the camera before the shutter closed, resulting in a misty effect and some strange diagonal flaring. I processed it nevertheless and actually quite liked the result 🙂

The funny thing that happened. While I was out shooting a guy came over to talk to me and pulled out a post card of Le Plateau with pictures of homes and doors and wanted to know where he could find them. Luckily I had just shot one of them so could tell him exactly (for one at least). Perhaps I should consider organizing photo walks for tourists 😉
