Last Friday was ‘In town without my car’ day (En ville sans ma voiture) and was celebrated in more than 2150 cities around the world.

The International campaign began in 1998 by the European Union to encourage the use of alternative forms of transport, but it quickly spread to municipalities and countries outside the EU borders.

The event in downtown Montreal has been organised by the AMT since 2003. In past years, Montreal has celebrated by closing off the main shopping thoroughfare rue Sainte Catherine to car traffic, but this year celebrations were mainly restricted to Square Victoria. I was in the vicinity early morning, so stopped by to grab a few pictures.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to stay longer and catch some of the activities that were planned during the day, or get to go and check out 1 or more of the 250 car parking spaces around town that were transformed into user friendly spaces.
