McTavish pumping station

With strong winds in the forecast for this afternoon I had considered going and shooting some long exposures and get some nice black and white shots where the clouds turn to a smooth silky look. But with gusts of 90km/hr I don’t think my tripod would have been up to the job of keeping the camera steady long enough.

So again I resort to pulling some images from a few days ago for the post today. On Wednesday I took a short walk across Rutherford Park which covers the McTavish Reservoir just above McGill University downtown campus between Avenue Docteur Penfield and Avenue des Pins.

I’ve shot here a few times, together with giving a bit of history of the reservoir, so I’ll just get straight to a few pictures of the chateau styled McTavish Pumping Station.

Source of recent flooding

There have been a couple of instances in recent years where mains water pipes have fractured at the reservoir. Being at the top of the hill, the breakages have resulted in severe flooding in the downtown core.

The last incident in January this year caused widespread flooding of the nearby McGill University buildings near rue McTavish. I imagine this is why they now have concrete barricades lining the road – just in case it happens again (you can see the barricades in the next image).

The city is in the process of replacing the old water pipes in the area, so hopefully breakages and flooding will be a thing of the past (in this area anyway).

Since I was on Docteur Penfield, I grabbed a shot of the rear of the Redpath museum, The museum is worth a visit if you are in the area. I did a short pictorial review here.

I trust the weather will be a bit brighter over the weekend, but with the strong winds today, I guess most of the fall leaves have been blown to Nova Scotia, but fingers crossed a few autumnal shots are still to be found.

Thanks for stopping by. Have a great weekend !
