Project 365 – Day 289: Place du Canada

October 15 2012

Just next to rue de la Cathédrale that runs alongside the Cathédrale Marie-Reine-du-Monde is an elevated ramp/walkway leading to the Place du Canada tower and Marriott Hotel. It provides a nice vantage point to take photographs from a couple of directions.

The first couple of shots are looking back towards downtown along rue de la Cathédrale with a few well know buildings in the background; The Sunlife, Cathédrale Marie-Reine-du-Monde, Queen Elizabeth Hotel and 1 Place Ville Marie.

Looking to the left there is another great juxtaposition of old meeting new.

Next to the Place du Canada building is the 1000 de la Gauchetière tower, the tallest building in Montreal (51 floors) with its modern stone pillars and domed lower facade. I plan to shoot this building more soon (hopefully including the inside and the popular Atrium ice rink).

The Marriott Château Champlain hotel is often referred to as the Cheese Grater due to the curved shape of its windows.

I hadn’t really noticed the curved vents on the walls before..

It’s been a while since I did a floating (mirrored) building and thought I would give it a go with the image I shot of the Marriott. The way I shot it didn’t really make it easy to produce a floating result, but I kind of like how it almost resembles a smiling robot head.

There was a pretty nice sunset this evening, but I was already home and knew by the time I got to a good spot it would be dark, so I just grabbed a quick shot from our apartment.
