Project 365 – Day 314: Square Phillips

November 9 2012

Today, I only managed a quick visit downtown late afternoon.

My first stop was at Square Phillips that is the small park opposite La Baie department store. The square is named after Thomas Phillips (1778-1842) who was a land developer, businessman and architect in Montreal.

Also located next to the square is the famous Henry Birks and Sons jewellery store that has occupied the same magnificent building since 1894.

Although not very clear in the pictures I shot tonight, the main focal point of the square is the large monument of Edward VII. The monument is by Louis-Philippe Hébert and was unveiled in 1914. Hébert also sculpted the Maisionneuve (place d’Armes) and Jeanne Mance (Hotel Dieu Hospital) monuments.

I don’t believe I have shot Phillips Square in detail yet during the day, but I’ll make sure I do so in the near future.

Next stop was Place des Arts. I’ve posted many shots from here in the past, but decided to grab a few shots while passing through.

The Museum of Contemporary Art is located in the Place des Arts Complex and if you look through the glass skylight you can see some public works of art on display below.
