The Courtyard Marriott Hotel

Continuing on from the last post, today I have a handful of images taken on May 5 that I shot on my way back from Old Montreal.

I love the row of townhouses on the east side of rue Anderson that provide a nice juxtaposition against the 1960’s style office building on boulevard René-Lévesque.

While I was in the area, I wanted to get some shots of one of the latest additions to the Montreal skyline – the Courtyard Marriott hotel on boulevard René-Lévesque (between rue Bleury and rue Anderson).

The Imperial Theatre

Further up on Bleury street (just north of rue Sainte-Catherine) is the wonderful old Imperial Theatre that was built in 1913 as a Vaudeville Playhouse. An interesting fact of the building history was that the theatre was rented in 1934 to the Canadian film pioneer Léo-Ernest Ouimet. Other key facts for the Imperial; In 1954 it became the first Canadian theatre to be equipped with Cinerama, and then in 1988, it garnered another Canadian first, being the first THX cinema in Canada.

In 1995 the theatre was donated by the owner at the time – Famous Players – to the World Film Festival. Following its recognition as a historical monument in 2001, the theatre underwent major renovation between 2002-4, bringing it back to its former glory. In 2005 the building was transferred to the non profit organization Centre Cinéma Impérial inc., that continues to operate the theatre today and plays host to numerous events and festivals.

Perhaps one day I will get the opportunity to shoot inside the theatre as it has some wonderful decor.
