Burner Alley

It had been a while since I last visited Burner alley located between avenue Laval and avenue de l’Hôtel de Ville near rue Napoleon.

Why the name Burner Alley? The name comes from the fact that among the people who create the art works and maintain the alley, some are regular attendees to the annual Burning Man festival at Black Rock Desert in Nevada. Burning Man is pretty high up on my bucket list to visit one day. At least now I know where to find some locals with knowledge of the event for helping me plan my trip should the opportunity ever arise.

Since my last visit, there are a few new additions to the alley.

The fact the clocks are all set to 10 past 10 makes me think a photographer is responsible for this particular installation…for those unaware, in time piece photography, the hands are generally set at 10 past 10 (or 10 to 2) to help emphasize the brand/logo.

I recently purchased a new lens – the Nikkor 35mm 1.8G. Although I have the 85mm 1.8 lens, I wanted a slightly wider fast lens for everyday shooting and at just over 200$ this met my limited budget.

So far, I’m very happy with the lens and the focal length (52.5mm equivalent since I shoot with a cropped Nikon sensor) is great for many occasions.

It was the only lens I had with me when shooting Burner Alley and I liked the shallow depth of field that resulted from even shooting at f4.5. The numerous flowers and plants made for good shallow depth of field subjects.

Although not in Burner Alley, while I’m sharing some shots of flowers, here is a nice sunflower that I shot round the corner…

Mural Festival – A couple of additional shots

Since this post has a bit of an artsy flavour, I managed to grab a couple more shots of some murals created at the recent mural festival on The Main. If you missed my previous posts, here are the links:

In particular, I was very happy to find no cars parked in front of the amazing Alexis Diaz mural. I was passing after it had rained and as luck would have it there was a small puddle in the car park that allwed me to get a nice shot with reflections of both Alexis Diaz and 123 Klan’s murals.

Although the above shot looks like I was shooting beside a lake, it was in fact a pretty small puddle…

Mathieu Connery

If you walk up Saint Laurent boulevard you will likely come across a number of pavement murals by canadian artist Mathieu Connery.

Here’s one in front of the Station 16 – a gallery well worth a visit if you’re passing by!
