First day of spring, but wishing it was 2012

Today is the first day of spring…Except for a little snow overnight that then turned to rain, it was at least feeling warmer today. I’ve been doing this photo blog since the beginning of 2012 and fortunately I have taken pictures on this day for the past 3 years, so why do I wish it was 2012? This image says it all I think:

First day of spring 2012

Normally in Montreal, the first day of spring is around 3 degrees. The record for March 20 was previously set in 1946 with 14 degrees, but in 2012 the thermometer hit 23 degrees.

But perhaps we should be thankful it’s not 2013. Last year on March 19, Montreal received 25cm of snow and there was still plenty of it lying on the street to welcome the first day of spring. Despite the snow on the ground, last year was at least sunny with the temperature at around 1 degree. Here is a shot from March 20 2013 taken at Ville Marie…

So what about 2014? Not great. Okay, it was around 4 degrees but rained pretty much all day. The weather did improve in the afternoon and I went looking for some bright coloured buildings to try and brighten up an otherwise gloomy grey day.

There is a nice row of brightly painted homes on rue Drolet that added a bit of colour to my day…

I did find a few other splashes of colour around and perhaps will post these tomorrow. At least the long range forecast looks like slightly warmer and brighter days ahead.

Thanks for stopping by. Until next time.
