Today I have some shots taken last Saturday at this year’s final TELUS Fire on Ice fireworks display at the Parc du Bassin Bonsecours. I was a bit late getting there and already large crowds had gathered and grabbed the good spots, so rather than fighting my way to a spot next to the ice rink, I decided to install myself at the top of the mountain of snow on the north side of the Promenade du Vieux-Port.
Being quite a distance from the Bonsecours Basin Pavilion it wasn’t the best spot for shooting the fireworks display and getting close-up shots of skaters and the pavilion. I had originally imagined some long shutter speeds with blurred skaters in the foreground and fireworks overhead, but that will have to now wait until next year.
I was a bit out of practice shooting fireworks, so before heading out I did familiarise myself with some rudimentary tips that I covered in a fireworks photography how-to post in 2012. I just wish that I had checked my remote control earlier in the day, as I discovered that my battery was dead and had to resort to manual shutter release – Thankfully I didn’t end up with too much camera movement though.

The display lasted around 20 minutes and was accompanied by various musical film sound tracks like Flame. The fireworks were not as spectacular as the displays during the summer International Fireworks competition, but is still great entertainment for 4 cold winter evenings.
