Project 365 – Day 264: The Roddick gates and people abseiling

September 20 2012

I don’t believe I’ve posted yet an image of the Roddick gate on Sherbrook street at the entrance of McGill University. I normally walk up the main road of the campus when passing through the campus, but this afternoon decided to take the right hand path at the Roddick gate entrance.

The Greek styled colonnades were donated by Lady Amy Redpath Roddick in memory of her husband Sir Thomas George Roddick in 1924. Sir Roddick was a renowned doctor who began the regular practice of sterile surgery using antiseptics and was dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1901 to 1908. The gates were designed by the architect Gratton Thompson.

There’s quite a bit of renovation work being carried out on various buildings throughout the campus, including the Schulich library of science and engineering. Shrouded in green netting, except for the entrance and the being lit from the side by the low sun actually made it quite interesting to photograph.

On McGill College avenue there was some event going on that had people abseiling down the BNP Paribas tower. I passed by at 9 this morning but didn’t have my camera on me, luckily they were still rapelling when I passed again late this afternoon with my camera.

The view of the people going down the tower was even better from the inside. 🙂

Each person who decended the building raise about 1,000$ for a childrens charity. The idea is people dressed up as super heros to raise money for kids. It is a pretty good way to raise money in an office because there is nothing like raising money to see your coworkers hanging outside the building on a rope. 🙂
