Project 365 – Day 306: A wet evening on boulevard Saint-Laurent

November 1 2012

Having not taken any pictures of glowing pumpkins yesterday, I had read earlier in the week that there was going to be an installation made up of 500 candles on Place Gérald Godin (outside the Mont Royal métro station) from 6-8.30pm tonight and tomorrow.

Despite the rain, I headed up to avenue Mont Royal to check it out, really hoping that it hadn’t been cancelled – since I hadn’t shot anything else during the entire day. Unfortunately there wasn’t a single candle in sight and with the rain stating to come down harder, I decided to head back home hoping to get a few snaps along the way. The conditions weren’t that ideal and I ended up taking just a few shots at high ISO and having to shoot quick to prevent my camera lens getting wet – so quality is not the best 🙁

Hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow and perhaps I’ll try to find out if the candles will be lit.

I like the fact that you are doing less HDR. These are very beautiful pictures.

Or that the HDR effect is less pronounced..

I had to cut down on taking bracketed shots as both my external hard drives are near their capacity and can’t afford another drive at the moment 🙁 I still like HDR, but try to keep away from the ‘on acid’ shots 😉

These photos are so entertaining from a non-photographer point of view. The first photos of a cheerful, bright, city-life continuing inside while the dark and dreary world outside is ignored brings to mind secrets and mysteries that I want to explore. There is a blurred, sort of can’t-quite-focus on reality thing that makes me think of the unseen, unknowable world of fantasy. The final photo of the gargoyl gazing down at the woman is amazing in that it appears they are isolated in their activity – the pedestrian rushing by seems to be aware of danger but willing to leave the gargoyle to his prey. Like in Toy Story you know they will continue their scene once all the real people are safely in their homes.

I do enjoy your website so much!
