I read an article in today’s Montreal Gazette about the cool winter lights that have been installed along avenue du Mont-Royal and so headed up there around dusk to check them out.

The lights were the creation of Estelle Jugant and Yazid Belkhir who won a contest held in 2012 by the Société de développement de l’avenue du Mont-Royal for young artists to create winter lighting to liven up the street in winter months.

Their winning design features a number of illuminated word bubbles mounted to lampposts with cartoon-like characters and icons. The cartoons and illustrations were the work of local artists Astro (cartoons) and Jean-François Poliquin (Icons) with whom Jugant and Belkhir partnered with for the project.

Between the four of them they did a great job and I think the concept fits really well with the hip and trendy style of avenue du Mont-Royal. 

My pictures unfortunately didn’t come out as well as I had hoped, but at least gives you an idea of the installations that run all the way from Boulevard Saint-Laurent to rue d’Iberville. Perhaps I will try again another night with the tripod and when there are less people and traffic arround so as to get some better angles (for which I now have a few ideas).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A nice feature of the installations are that the colours of each bubble change frequently.

 

 

I find avenue du Mont-Royal (particularly east of the Metro) has really improved in recent years and tonights walk certainly makes me think this would be a great place to live with many bars, restaurants, cafes and food stores. Maybe this year I will make more photowalks around this area.
