Project 52 – Week 3: Montreal Skyline viewed from Ile Sainte Hélène

Last Friday I went over to Ile Sainte Hélène with the plan to check out the Snow Village after my aborted attempt the previous week. Even though it was now open to the public they were still finishing off some of the rooms, so I decided I would save my money and visit another day to take some pictures…maybe later this week.

Since I was over on the island – and despite it feeling like minus 27 – I hung around until sunset to grab some shots of the Montreal skyline across the Saint Lawrence. With the sudden drop in temperature (only a few days before it had been raining and unseasonably mild) there was quite a bit of ice floating down the Saint Lawrence and so I decided to climb down to the edge of the river to get some low angle shots.

I noticed that the ice near to where I was shooting was actually flowing in the opposite direction to that of the main river and so decided to take a long exposure. I discovered the water was actually flowing in a large circle and was glad I had taken a long exposure using the B&W ND 3 filter.

You can see the circular flow of the water again in this next shot. A shame I hadn’t spotted the branch at the bottom when I was framing up the shot but I was beginning to get numb from the cold and was looking forward to getting home to the warmth.

To finish, here are a couple of shots taken from outside the Snow Village. The theme this year is New York and from some of the images I’ve seen online there are some great ice sculptures and snow carvings I’m looking forward to photographing.
