Street food returns to Montréal

It seems like a lot of people were happy to see the return of street food in Montréal today:

After 66 years, street food will be once again available in Montréal. From today (20th June) until the 29th September, 27 vendors (see end of post for full list) will be rotating between 9 locations in the city (click on the map for details of exact locations).

Since the trucks will be required to rotate between the various locations (a great idea to ensure fair competition between vendors and variety for customers) the city has made available a Calendar on the Ville de Montréal website. I checked this morning to see who would be where at what time. I made a point of having lunch before leaving so I wouldn’t be tempted to try each menu 😉

Being the first day of the pilot study, it appeared that only 5 locations would be occupied today; Place du Canada, Peel street, The Cité du Multimédia, Square Victoria and Mount Royal. I decided to visit the first 3.

I have to say, I love the name Nomade So6 (with the So6 being pronounced Saucisses – clever). No need to guess that their specialty is hot dogs – but like all the vendors selected, the food is not your traditional street fare but more of the gourmet variety.

For once it does seem that the City really planned this through and got their act together – complete with designated food truck street markings.

You may have noticed that I messed up with the ISO after a couple of shots. I must have pressed the button and turned the dial my mistake and didn’t even think that having to close the aperture and shoot at high speed was an issue – at least in most cases the exposure wasn’t too bad – just a bit grainy…I really should pay more attention at times:-(

Anyway, moving on…

Le point sans g and Saigon at the Cité du Multimédia

The City’s Street Food calendar calendar did mention that Le point sans g would be there, but not Saigon, so that was a bonus (although I don’t see them listed in the 27 participants, so they may have been crashing the party). I know my girlfriend will be checking out Le point G since they specialize in gluten free dishes (hence the sans g in the name) 🙂 Seems like gluten free is in demand as they had sold everything by the time I passed by.

I’m happy to see the return of street food to Montréal and hope the pilot project confirms to those in charge that there is nothing wrong with having food served out of a truck and that this will become a permanent feature of Montréal.

I will be planning to check out the other venues over the coming weeks.

Thanks for stopping by. Until next time.
