Project 365 – Day 262: Textures, abstracts and reflections

September 18 2012

With heavy rain in the forecast for today, I decided to head down to Old Montreal first thing this morning (well, after the 2 cups of coffee necessary to get me going).

I quickly realized Tuesday mornings are not the best time to photograph in Old Montreal as it’s recycling collection day and the streets weren’t looking at their best.

Although it hadn’t started raining yet, I managed to find a nice puddle along rue Saint Paul for what is becoming one of my favorite past-times – lying in the middle of the road, photographing puddles and getting strange looks from people.

Although I have posted a picture of Les Chuchoteuses sculpture (The Whisperers) by Rose-Aimée Bélanger before, that was when the ladies were partly buried in snow, so thought it would be nice to show them in a more summery situation.

I spotted a nice old door near the Centaur Theater on rue Saint François Xavier. I’m currently trialing Nik Software’s  Silver Efex Pro 2, so after tone mapping with Photomatix, I decided to convert to monochrome and process using Silver Efex. It will be interesting to see what the outcome will be of Google acquiring Nik Software early this week. This will likely be my next software purchase when I have the funds :-/

A while back, I noticed some metal sculptures along rue le Royer Ouest. I took some shots of a few this morning, but most of my shots were close ups of textures or abstracts. Each sculpture (there’s quite a few) looks like some kind of machine. I will probably go back one evening and shoot more of them, I think they may look cool lit at night and less background distractions.

The first texture shot I found looks almost like a landscape painting…or is it just too much coffee making me see trees ?

I’ve not used textures as a layer much before, and even if I don’t use them for such, I find it a good exercise looking for textures, and think some may actually look nice as a print in their own right. Anyone else take texture shots? if so, would love to hear how you use them.
