Project 365 – Day 316: Redpath Museum

November 11 2012

As planned, we visited the Redpath Museum today which is located within the McGill University campus on Sherbrooke street. The museum has extensive collections in the fields of paleontology, zoology, mineralogy, and world cultures (ethnology).

The Redpath Museum is in fact an academic unit of McGill University but is open to the general public. Entry is free (unless you are in a group of 10 or more), but it’s recommended to make a donation in the contribution box at the entrance.

The building housing the museum was constructed in 1882 and is Canada’s oldest building that was built as a museum. It originally housed the collections of Sir William Dawson who was Principal of McGill at the time. The main gallery is named in his honor.

A key exhibit of the museum is the skeleton of a Gorgosaurus Libratus Dinosaur that greets you as you enter the main Dawson Gallery on the first floor.
