Project 365 – Day 199: L’International des Feux Loto-Québec – Greece

July 17 2012

If you are a regular reader, I hope you aren’t getting too bored of seeing so many firework display photos. If you are, my apologies because here is another – Night 4 of L’International des Feux Loto Québec.

Tonight it was the turn of the Greek team, Nanos Fireworks, the oldest and most prestigious fireworks company in Greece. The theme was 2012: Rebirth of Humanity. I was looking forward to seeing this display after viewing the soundtrack that included the Mission Impossible theme, Extreme Ways (Moby), Requiem for a Dream, Safe from Harm (Massive Attack) and part of the HAL narrative from 2001: A Space Odyssey…to name a few.

This time I watched the show from next to Park Belerive which is just east of the Jacques Cartier bridge on rue Notre Dame. It’s quite a popular spot, but plenty of space to find a non obstructed view. The only problem is it’s behind a railway line with a fence and overhead wires, but you are pretty close to the action.

I still haven’t purchased a replacement remote trigger, so setting the aperture to f16 I experimented with different exposures between 4 and 15 seconds. I prefer to work with the remote though since you have no idea what each blast will be, so it was a bit hit and miss. As always, I took a LOT of pictures, but only going to share a few, so as not to over-dose everyone with fireworks. A few I thought came out quite interesting and different to previous shots.

This next shot almost looks like a macro shot of some alien plant, particularly with the small puffs of smoke along the red trails.

This next shot appears almost the opposite to the last and could be taken for a deep space shot 😉

Following on from Saturday’s attempt, I thought I would try processing a few more firework shots in black and white.

As an experiment, tonight I recorded a couple of short segments of the display – including the finale. This was the first time I tried the video mode on the D7000, so forgive the cameraman, but at least I had it mounted on a tripod :-). I did a quick edit using Windows Movie Maker (which I haven’t used for a long time). Maybe next time I’ll get a little more creative and add the music soundtrack.
