Project 365 – Week 3

Continuing the 365 project where I plan taking a picture everyday, here is a roundup of photos taken during week 3…Hopefully I’ll catch up next week with the weekly roundups.

Day 15 – Jan 15th 2012

Place des Arts

Place des Arts

With freezing temperatures (-30 with wind chill), I plucked up the courage to venture out with the plan of grabbing a few shots of the current lighting display over at Place des Arts. Each year there is a light display that runs through most of the winter months. This year it was hanging ice cube trays lit by projectors and spot lamps.

Although I did manage to capture a few images of the display (see below), the actual image I used for the daily posting was taken looking through the futuristic skylight to the Place des Arts concourse below. Although the original image came out better than I thought, I put in a little extra processing effort using Topaz Adjust.

After leaving Place des Arts, I managed to grab a quick bracketed shot looking up Ontario street opposite UQAM looking toward the Anglican Church of St. John the Evangelist.

The final photo of the night was looking down through the UQAM (University de Quebec et Montreal) campus toward Ontario street.

Given my finger was almost freezing on the shutter release I was pretty happy I managed to grab quite as many shots as I did, but was definitely time to head into the warm.

Day 16 – Jan 16th 2012

Mount Royal Park (East side)

Mount Royal Park (East side)

Took a quick walk on Mont Royal late afternoon. There were lots of cross country skiers out, but didn’t manage to get any decent shots. The only image I was fairly happy with was of benches in the snow next to the George-Étienne Cartier Monument on the East slope.

 Day 17 – Jan 17th 2012

New Beach in the Old Port

New Beach in the Old Port

Another snow storm swept across Montreal and I really wasn’t sure I would manage to catch anything worthwhile. I had planned to simply go and shoot The Metropolis from outside since the concert venue had just been named the World’s 9th most popular venue in ticket sales by Pollstar.

In the end I ended up in the Old Port. I was surprised to see that the umbrellas were up on the new beach that has been built near the clock tower on the Quai de l’Horloge. Calling it a beach is probably a bit strong, since you won’t actually be able to swim, but apparently will be sandy with chairs and (as we can see) umbrellas. Hopefully when it opens this summer the weather will be better than today.

The picture posted above was taken while it was still snowing hard (as were all the other pics below) and I could hardly make out the Jacques-Cartier bridge in the distance. With a bit of manipulation using Lightroom, Topaz Adjust and Photoshop, I was able to bring out the detail more – another good reason for shooting always in RAW.

The following 3 images were taken around the Clock Tower on the Quai de l’Horloge.

The final image captured of the day was of the Christmas decorations in Place Vauquelin against City Hall.

Day 18 – Jan 18th 2012

Since I was due to fly to the UK early evening I planned to take a couple of shots while waiting at the Pierre Elliot Trudeau airport.

While waiting at the gate (ended up being the wrong one…but that’s another story), I grabbed this HDR (3 exposures).

Day 19 – Jan 19th 2012

Upon arriving at London’s Heathrow Terminal 5, I took the following shot while waiting for my bag to turn up on the carousel in the baggage hall.

Day 20 – Jan 20th 2012

Not much action on the photo taking front and I only managed to grab a close up shot of a Tiffany lamp

Day 21 – Jan 21st 2012

Another slow day on the photo shooting front, but not looking at photos. Spent the evening putting names to old family photographs…and there were a lot of them. The picture reminds me of the first photograph I took that kicked off this whole 365 project.

Although being on holiday in the UK, I still plan posting next weeks round up, but obviously they’ll have nothing to do with Montreal.

Thanks for stopping by. Until next time.
